1. BRAZIL

  • The US is the main importer of Brazilian coffee. The US bought more than 7 billion bags in 2018 and this number increases with each passing year. Germany, Italy, and Japan are also the major destinations for Brazilian coffee.

2. VIETNAM

  • Vietnam is the 2nd largest coffee producer in the world after Brazil. Over the past several decades, coffee production in Vietnam has developed a lot and it brings millions of dollars in revenue each year.

  • Vietnam is the major source of Robusta coffee for many large coffee roasters and it gives more than 40% of global output in the 2019-2020 marketing years. Vietnam experienced a rapid expansion in coffee production from 6000 tons in 1975 to almost 2 million tons in 2016.

  • Since the 1990s Vietnam has emerged as a major player in the global coffee industry. And Vietnam exported qty was 1,434,814 tons in year 2019.

3. COLOMBIA

  • Colombia is sitting at number 3 in coffee production after Brazil and Vietnam. Colombia is renowned for its quality coffee. It produces approx. 810000 tons of coffee beans per year and major importers are the US, Germany, France, Italy, and Japan. The total qty of coffee was 769,050 tons in 2019.

  • Climate is the key contributor to produce the best quality coffee in Colombia. In 2019 Colombian Coffee Exports grew 7% to 13.7 million 60 kg bags of green coffee from the 12.8 million bags sold abroad in 2018.

4. INDONESIA

  • Indonesia is exporting coffee since 1711. Indonesia is climatologically well-suited for coffee production. It is the fourth-largest coffee producer worldwide.

  • Today there are more than 20 varieties of Arabica growing in Indonesia. Currently coffee is the country’s fourth most exported Agri-food after Palm oil, Fish, and crustaceans.

  • Worldwide coffee exports by country totaled an estimated 359,053 tons in 2019, dropping by an overall -0.9% for all coffee shippers over the five-year period starting in 2015.

5. ETHIOPIA

  • Ethiopia is famous for being the birthplace of coffee. Ethiopia boasts coffee varieties that consistently rank highly among the world’s best coffees. These are often categorized by region and include Yirgacheffe, Ethiopian Harrar, Ethiopian Sidamo, Ethiopian Limu, Djimmah Coffee, and Lekempti.

  • Ethiopia is unique among the world’s coffee-producing countries in that around 50% of the coffee it produces stays within the domestic market, for consumption by Ethiopians. Ethiopia exported 245,376 tons of coffee in 2019.
